Dr William Martin

Interventional Cardiologist

Dr William Martin is an Interventional Cardiologist who returned to Tasmania in 2023 having gained subspecialty experience in the United Kingdom.

Dr Martin graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2012 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and was awarded clinical distinction. He went on to complete his internship locally before moving to Melbourne to undertake physician training at St Vincent’s Hospital. He went on to complete cardiology advanced training at St Vincent’s, The Austin and Royal Hobart hospitals.

Dr Martin was admitted to the specialist register in 2019. In 2020 completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In 2021 supported by the prestigious MG Ciezer memorial scholarship he travelled to Cambridge for a further fellowship at the Royal Papworth Hospital which is the UKs largest dedicated heart and lung hospital. In 2022 he moved to James Cook University Hospital for a further year of fellowship. While in the United Kingdom he split his time between training in interventions for structural heart disease as well as complex coronary intervention.

Over 3 years of fellowship training Bill has gained experience in world leading centres in the treatment of aortic valve disease via a minimally invasive procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and is a formally accredited TAVI practitioner by the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. Dr Martin has expertise in “alternative access” procedures where there is difficulty delivering a heart valve from the leg artery. Dr Martin has high volume experience in the treatment of coronary artery disease including treatment of more complex disease patterns such as those that are heavily calcified or have been chronically occluded.

In addition Dr Martin has experience percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks, closure of patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defects and transcatheter edge to edge repair to treat mitral regurgitation.

Dr Martin is a staff specialist interventional cardiologist at the Royal Hobart Hospital and is currently accepting new referrals at the Hobart Heart Centre.
